How to Connect with your Dojang’s Group on the Institute

<< Back To Help Index

This guide is dedicated to students who would like to join their Dojang’s group on the institute.  By joining your Dojang’s group, you will have access to videos and material that your instructor has developed or selected for you.

Step 1 – Talk to your instructor

Your instructor may have an account or group name and/or a specific code for you to use.  The following questions will help you gather the information you will need to get started.

  • What is the name of the account or group your instructor wants you to connect with?
  • Is there a specific code your instructor wants you to use when registering?
  • Does your instructor have a specific order that you are supposed to view the material in?
  • What is the studio Id for your dojang?
  • What is your Gup or Dan Number? (Students enrolled in the Tiny Tigers (or similar) program might not have a number and that’s ok.)

Step 2 – Create an account

The following steps will guide you in creating your Soo Bahk Do Institute account. If you already have an account, skip to Step 3. (For underage students, make sure you have your parents or guardian’s permission.  Parents or guardians, you may fill out the registration on behalf of the student.)

  • In the upper right-hand corner of the page, you should see a “Signup now” link right next to “Log in”

  • Click “Signup now” and you will see a page that will give you an option to login or Register

  • Click “Register now” and you will see a page that allows you to fill out your information.  (Note: you must be at least 13 years of age)

  • Fill out your information, agree to the terms of use, and click the “Register now” button at the bottom.
    • Note: the username and email address must be unique.  You will get an error if that username or email address has already been used.

  • You have now completed registration and should see a page showing you have logged in.

  • You will receive an email to validate your email address within 24 hours. You may need to look in your spam/junk folder just in case.  If the confirmation email was sent to your junk/spam folder, make sure to mark it as not junk so you will receive future emails in your inbox.
  • Click the link in your email to complete the registration.

Step 3 – Find the group

If you skipped to this step or are not logged in already, you will need to log in to continue.  Just use the “Log in” link at the top right of the page and you’ll be presented with the login page. Enter your username and password and click the “Log in now” button.  If you forgot your login information, there are links on the page to help you reset or recover them.

  • Once you are logged in, click the “Groups” link in the top menu of the page.

  • After clicking the Groups link, you will see a page that shows groups on the right.
  • Locate the search bar at the top of that section

  • Type in the name of the group and click the “Search” button to the right.  If there’s a match, you should see the group you are looking for displayed below the search bar.  If not, make sure you typed the group name correctly.

Step 4 - Request Access

If you are not already a member of the group, you will be given an opportunity to request access to the group.

Option A: Continuing the process

  • Click on the Group and you will see a popup letting you know that you need to be a member of the group.  To continue, click the button that says “Click here to send them a friend request.”

  • After clicking, you may be redirected to the page of the school or content owner.  Simply return back to the group page or close the browser.
  • You will receive an email from the institute when the instructor/owner of the group allows you access.  You may have to check your junk/spam folder.

Option B: Continuing the process (Alternate Path)

  • If you are continuing the process defined in steps 1-3, but you did not get the popup when you clicked the group, you may get directed to the group page first.
  • If you are not a member of the group, you will be notified in two different areas.  These areas will be at the top of the lighter content section and also right above the videos.

  • On this screen, you will also find the “Permalink:” field.  You can copy this URL to make this group easier to find in the future.
  • Click the “Join Group” button.
  • After clicking, you may be redirected to the page of the school or content owner.  Simply return back to the group page or close the browser.
  • You will receive an email from the institute when the instructor/owner of the group allows you access.  You may have to check your junk/spam folder.

Option C: Your instructor shared a link to the group or a video with you

If your instructor shared a link to the group page or a video and you don’t have access, you will be prompted and given an opportunity to request access

  • When viewing the page with the video thumbnails, you will see a white lock icon in the upper right-hand corner if you don’t have access.

  • If you click the video or follow a link directly to a video you don’t have access to, you will see a pop-up.  This pop-up gives you an opportunity to request access.

  • After clicking, you may be redirected to the page of the school or content owner.  Simply return back to the group page or close the browser.
  • You will receive an email from the institute when the instructor/owner of the group allows you access.  You may have to check your junk/spam folder.

Step 5 – View Content

Congratulations! You are now ready to view the content your instructor has provided for you! You will also have access to all future content added to the group. You shouldn’t have to rejoin this group unless you are removed from it for some reason.

Step 6 – Managing Your New Profile

Now that you have registered and can view content, you may need to perform some basic account actions such as checking for invites, emails, or subscriptions.

  • To get started, all you have to do is hover over your name in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

  • Once you hover over (or click) your name, you will see a menu appear that will provide several options.

Emails and Invites on the Institute

The first two items in the profile menu will show you whether or not you have emails or invites.

  • The number of unread emails or unattended invites will show next to their respective names.

  • If you click on either Email or Invites, you will be presented with a list of them (if any).
  • Emails you can read or delete.  If you click on Invites, you can choose to delete the invite, view the profile of the person who invited you, or accept the invite.

  • If you click View Profile, a new tab will open in your browser showing you the profile of the person who invited you.  You can go back to the previous tab to get back to your list of invites.
  • If you click “Accept Invite”, you will see a confirmation message showing you that the invite was accepted.

  • If you accepted a friend invite, you can now see content only shared to friends from the person who invited you.
